Hello! I've just published the second critique in our Writer's Workshop for premium subscribers! Check out "The Misfit Architects" - A Sci-Fi Adventure by Hannah El Hamalawy
I loved this! I'm one of those writers who dives in head first into the worldbuilding. But maybe I need to pay more attention to POV early on? I think I do a lot of internal POV, but I don't really ground the main character in their environment. If that makes sense? It's like I'm doing world building or character building, but not enough of both at the same time. Lots to think about! Thanks!
You know, POV is one of those aspects of the craft that I still struggle with and need to learn better as well. Done with skill, it can add so much depth to a work and really engage the reader and get them more invested in your story. The nice thing is that a deeper POV can be layered in during revisions, so it's not always necessary to get it right from the start. Although, I do think it can make your story stronger as you get deeper into that first draft.
Wow! Thank you Paula! I really appreciate the valuable feedback that you’ve provided on The Misfit Architects! And thanks for the great tips on two series that I’ve totally missed out on! While it can always be difficult to come face to face with whatever is lacking in one’s writing, your feedback is so well written (and light-hearted) that I feel empowered to rework the text and give it all I’ve got! Obviously, I need some more planning, but since this is the first draft I feel very fortunate to have been given such valuable feedback so early on! You’ve given me just what I needed and I’m rewriting the beginning with your expert tips in mind asap! I haven’t recieved the annonated copy in my email so please send it again and I hope that you’ll devour the full story very soon 😃 love all your tips! Woop woop!
I'm so happy you found the analysis helpful, Hannah! It's a shame so many writers are too nervous to put up, or show, early drafts of their work, but sometimes that's the best time to get this sort of feedback because you can use those tips going forward. In any case, you're a brave writer, and I thank you for it! 😁
I do sense a very unique and intriguing concept here, so definitely keep at it, and I can't wait to see how your story evolves!
By the way, the annotated notes are coming. I have some issues I have to deal with this weekend, so I should be able to get those to you by Sunday...Monday, at the latest. And thanks again for participating in the Writer's Workshop! 😊
I'll be adding this to my reading list on Wattpad. Might I add, I didn't even need to watch the 100 clip, I've researched season 1 at least 6 times, and follow the show weekly. It's amazing, honestly, and as it's in its final season with only 3 episodes left, I pray that it is immortalized as one of the classics because it is truly phenomenal.
Oh, I LOVE "The 100"! (Dark Matter is a fun one to watch too.) Unfortunately, with The 100, I lost the thread in Season 3 and need to go back and finish up the series before it leaves Netflix.
You should really look up the pilot script for the show. Jason Rothenberg, the creator and head writer, did a fantastic job of setting up the story in a super-efficient and super-effective way. He knows how to hit those story beats and hit them well!

Thanks for reading and for your feedback, Jackie!

Here's a reputable site where you can download a PDf of the pilot episode - http://leethomson.myzen.co.uk/The_100_1x01_-_Pilot.pdf
